Welcome to our new workshop, ‘The Beautiful Game Through The Lens’.
The workshop from Rob Knight will give you a foundational introduction to sports / football photography, it will help you understand everything you need to get started with football photography and give you practical experience pitch side with an experienced photographer and club photographer.
What makes this workshop different is that we focus on the why as much as the how. There is plenty of teaching on how to make your images technically perfect. But there is little that covers the approach and the intent of image making. The Vision fills this gap.

Join us for an immersive, hands-on photography workshop dedicated to the art of football photography. Whether you're shooting grassroots games or professional matches, this workshop will equip you with the skills to freeze the action, tell compelling visual stories, and master the technical challenges of fast-paced sports photography.

- Pre-Game Prep: Understanding the sport, reading the game, and choosing the right gear
- Camera Settings: Mastering shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and autofocus for action shots
- Positioning & Timing: Where to stand, what to watch for, and how to anticipate key moments
- Storytelling: Capturing emotion, context, and the narrative of a match
- Post-Processing: Editing techniques to enhance drama and clarity in your images
- Going Pro: An introduction to the professional side of football photography in the UK, including how to obtain media accreditation, the importance of public liability insurance, and the ethical and legal responsibilities of working pitch-side
Workshop Format
- Duration: 2 Days – Online session to explore the theoretical side and prerequisites and then a full match day experience from pre match through to post match at one of Alfreton Town’s home friendlies for the 25/26 season this coming July.
- Location: Alfreton Town FC, The Impact Arena.
- Group Size: Max 4 participants for personal guidance
- Includes: On-field shooting, pitch-side coaching, and post-match editing session

- DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls
- Telephoto lens (minimum 200mm recommended)
- Spare batteries and memory cards
- Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear
- Laptop with editing software (optional for post-processing session)

Your Tutors

Rob has been a professional photographer and educator for over 25 years, he's exhibited solo at the esteemed Joe Cornish Gallery in North Yorkshire and the Patchings Art Centre in Nottingham.
Rob is a visual storyteller who explores ideas and concepts over longer form, often projects over many months and even years like his 'Dark Visions' and current ongoing 'Ardnamurchan Spirit' projects.
Rob has produced and released a number of books & zines, including 'Dark Visions', 'Ardnamurchan: pt.1' and 'Life's and Ocean' and is currently working on two new zines; 'Intertidal' to support his recent project and one in conjunction with Scunthorpe United Football Club. He has a series of new books in planning as a box set to bring his 'Ardnamurchan Spirit' work to completion in a few years time.
Rob's an experienced teacher, coach and mentor; he's an accredited Adobe Education Trainer, Microsoft Certified Educator and has undertaken extensive professional development training to support his teaching practice.
Rob has a long-established professional background in education and learning at both degree and master's level.
Rob is the organiser of the #Connected Exhibition and also facilitator of two arts and wellbeing photography groups; 'The Image Club' for the Royal Derby and Sheffield Northern General Hospitals.
Rob is Head of Photography / Club Photographer at Alfreton Town FC in the National League North, spent eighteen months photographing with Derby County including in their EFL League One promotion season and has photographed many EFL, Premier League and non league clubs.

This workshop is highly practical and will develop an effective toolkit with which you can frame your approach individually with photography moving forward. You will leave with an understanding of the art of sports photography and a selection of images that tell the story of the beautiful game.
You will also have a sound understanding of what is required to start and progress your journey as a sports photographer into a professional arena.
